While 2016’s presidential election was likely to be the most important one in recent memory, there are still more political events that will happen in the near future to shake the United States of America. Right now both major political parties are looking toward 2018 as a make-it-or-break-it political year thanks to a round of congressional elections that could leave President Trump vulnerable in a litany of different ways. While major players from both parties are focused on finding ways to elbow out the other a political action committee named End Citizens United is fighting to bring back a voice to the American people. End Citizens United recently made headlines with a round of endorsements in a variety of different Senate and congressional races.
End Citizens United most recently went on the record endorsing Senator Claire McCaskill as she seeks re-election in the state of Missouri. Senator McCaskill, a staunch Democrat, has found much in common with End Citizens United including the fact that they both are champions for campaign finance reform. End Citizens United leader Tiffany Muller went on record in a statement to say, “ECU is proud to endorse Senator Claire McCaskill.” Muller went on to stress the importance of every American’s ability to vote by saying, “The race in Missouri is critical to deciding whether the Senate will be controlled by politicians who are in the pockets of special interests”.
Tiffany Muller has been leading End Citizens United for the past year as they have sought to connect more American voters with their rights in the political arena. The primary issue that End Citizens United has coalesced around is in the field of campaign finance reform. In fact, End Citizens United is named after their ultimate goal: of ending the Citizens United decision made by the Supreme Court back in 2010. Citizens United is a right-wing group that fought for looser restrictions on campaign financing. This Supreme Court decision is largely considered to be one of the defining moments in the rise of special interests and dark money in the political field. This is an area that Senator McCaskill has gone on repeated record in order to support.
Senator McCaskill released a statement after her endorsement from End Citizens United. In the statement, Senator McCaskill said, “Missourians, and all Americans, deserve to know who is bankrolling the ads they see on TV and hear on the radio.” Senator McCaskill went on to say, “I am proud to be endorsed by End Citizens United and will continue to fight hard to return transparency and accountability to our elections.” McCaskill now faces a tough election campaign ahead of her as she seeks to stave off the big donors from right-wing, corporate America.
