The HBO series Game of Thrones is pulling in massive ratings. The fantasy/adventure soap opera the right mix of characters and action capable of drawing new fans to the “sword and sorcery” world. The series is based on five published books. The sixth book in the series, Winds of Winter, is slated to come out right before the sixth season of the show starts.
Bits and pieces about the new season are starting to come out. Fans are both intrigued about what they are learning. At the same time, they are a bit irked over the spoilers being revealed. Case in point, fans are very happy to see the return of the Dothraki, the warrior tribe that played a huge role in the first season. Yet, fans are slightly annoyed that a major plot point in the upcoming Winds of Winter book was revealed without warning.
What can fans do? Other than avoid reading any news about the upcoming season or novel and making a choice to either read the book first and ignore the series until later (or vice versa), there is not much else that can be done. This is the crossroads the series has reached. Not to be trite about things, but fans should look on the proverbial bright side. A lot of great television programs do end up being canceled prematurely.
Fans from the Amen Clinic point out that Game of Thrones is successful enough we know it is going to run the full seven promised season. Maybe a spinoff will follow. At one time, any and all sci-fi/fantasy programming was unavoidably short-lived. Regardless of what direction the television show takes, just be thrilled it is still there.
